If you're dreaming of a family holiday where everyone actually does something together — not just sitting by a pool — a surf trip to Morocco might be exactly what you're looking for. Essaouira and Sidi Kaouki offer the perfect combination: warm weather, gentle Atlantic waves, wide sandy beaches, and a relaxed atmosphere that suits families with children of all ages.

At Surf Twins Essaouira, we've been teaching families to surf since 2017. Some of our most memorable sessions have been with parents and kids learning together — cheering each other on, sharing wipeouts, and catching their first waves side by side. Here's everything you need to know about planning a family surf holiday in Morocco.

Why Morocco is Perfect for a Family Surf Holiday

Morocco sits just two to three hours from most European cities, making it one of the most accessible surf destinations in the world for families. There are no long-haul flights, no jet lag, and no extreme climate shock. Essaouira's Atlantic coast enjoys sunshine for most of the year, warm water temperatures, and the kind of consistent, manageable waves that are ideal for learning.

Unlike busier surf destinations, Essaouira and Sidi Kaouki are relaxed, uncrowded, and genuinely welcoming. The medina, the port, the local markets — there's plenty to explore between surf sessions for every member of the family. Morocco brings culture, food, and adventure all in one place.

What Age Can Kids Start Surfing?

We work with children from age 6 and up. In our experience, kids often progress faster than adults — they're lighter on the board, fearless in the water, and pick up the basics quickly once they feel comfortable. Our instructors are patient, encouraging, and experienced at adjusting their coaching style to each child's personality and confidence level.

For very young children, we focus on making the experience fun and positive above all else. There's no rush, no pressure, and no frustration. By the end of the session, most kids are desperate to go back in the next morning.

Family Surf Lessons in Essaouira & Sidi Kaouki

Our family surf lessons are built around one simple idea: everyone surfs together, at their own pace. We assess each person's level on the day and tailor the coaching to match — so even if mum is a complete beginner and dad has surfed a few times before, both get the right instruction without either feeling held back or left behind.

Sessions last 2 hours, run daily between 10am and 5pm, and include everything: surfboard, wetsuit, instruction, and transport to the best spot for the day's conditions. Group lessons are capped at 3 to 5 people per instructor, so your family gets real attention, not just a spot in a crowd.

If you'd prefer a fully private family session — one instructor dedicated entirely to your group — our private surf lessons are the way to go. This works especially well for families with mixed levels, where you want the instructor to move fluidly between different members of the group.

The Family Surf Day Trip — A Full Day on the Atlantic

For families who want more than a single 2-hour lesson, our surf day trip is one of the most popular options we offer. We pick you up from your accommodation in Essaouira at 10am, drive to the best surf spot of the day, run a 2-hour lesson in the morning, serve a traditional Moroccan lunch by the ocean, and then give you free surf time in the afternoon before dropping you back in Essaouira around 5pm.

For kids especially, the combination of the lesson, the beach, the lunch, and the afternoon paddling around makes for a genuinely memorable day. It's €50 per person, all inclusive — board, wetsuit, lunch, transport, and instruction.

The Family Surf Camp — A Week to Remember

If you're planning a longer stay, our family surf camp offers a full week of surfing, accommodation, meals, and cultural experiences all in one package. Based in Sidi Kaouki, the camp includes 6 nights in a private room, healthy breakfast every morning, 6 full days of surfing from 10am to 5pm, 12 hours of coaching, all equipment, daily transport, a picnic lunch, and afternoon supervised free surf.

By the end of the week, even complete beginners — adults and children alike — typically see remarkable progress. It's the kind of holiday families talk about for years afterwards.

Best Spots for Family Surfing Near Essaouira

We choose the surf spot for each session based on the day's conditions and your family's level. For beginners and children, we favour sheltered, sandy beaches with gentle rolling waves — plenty of white water to practice on, no rocks, and no strong currents. As confidence grows, we introduce slightly more open breaks with more push.

Sidi Kaouki, 25km south of Essaouira, is our home base and one of the best family surf spots on Morocco's Atlantic coast. Wide, open beaches. Consistent waves. No crowds. The kind of place where kids can run in and out of the water freely all day long.

What to Bring for a Family Surf Day

We provide everything you need for the water: surfboard, wetsuit, and instruction. All you need to bring is sunscreen (factor 50+ — the Atlantic sun is stronger than it looks), a change of clothes, a towel, and a hat for between sessions. Water shoes are useful for rocky sections of the beach, but not essential at our usual spots. For little ones, a UV-protective rash vest under the wetsuit is a good idea.
