How to Get to Essaouira from Marrakech for Surf: All Your Transfer Options
Why Essaouira is the Best Surf Destination from Marrakech
Marrakech and Essaouira are one of Morocco's most popular combinations. The medina city and the surf city, 170 kilometres apart, connected by one of the most beautiful drives in North Africa. Most visitors fly into Marrakech Menara Airport and many make Essaouira their next stop — and that's exactly the right instinct. Essaouira's Atlantic coast offers some of the most consistent, accessible surf in Africa, and the journey itself is worth it.
Option 1 — Private Transfer (Recommended)
The fastest and most comfortable option. A private driver meets you at your Marrakech hotel and drops you directly in Essaouira or at your accommodation in Sidi Kaouki. Typical cost: 600–900 MAD (€55–85) for the full vehicle, not per person. Best for groups of 2–5 or anyone with surfboard bags and luggage.

Option 2 — CTM Bus (Budget Option)
CTM is Morocco's national intercity bus company. Buses run from Marrakech to Essaouira several times daily, with the journey taking around 3 hours. One-way tickets cost approximately 90–110 MAD (€8–10). The bus is comfortable, air-conditioned, and reliable — a great option if you're travelling solo or on a budget.
The CTM station in Marrakech is near Bab Doukkala. Buses arrive at the CTM station in Essaouira, a short walk from the medina walls. From there, taxis to Sidi Kaouki cost around 150–200 MAD.
Option 3 — Shared Grand Taxi
Grand taxis run the Marrakech–Essaouira route and depart from the main taxi rank near Bab Doukkala station. You pay for a seat rather than the whole vehicle — they wait until the car is full (usually 6 passengers) before departing. Cost per seat: around 60–80 MAD. Journey time is 2.5–3 hours. This is the most local experience and the cheapest option, though not ideal with bulky surf bags.
Option 4 — Supratours Bus
Supratours operates coaches between Marrakech and Essaouira. Tickets are bookable in advance online and cost around 90 MAD. The journey takes 3 hours. A solid alternative to CTM with similar comfort levels.
Once You Arrive in Essaouira
Essaouira's medina is 15 minutes from the main surf zones, and about 40 minutes from Sidi Kaouki (25km south). Petit taxis in Essaouira are inexpensive. If you're heading directly to Sidi Kaouki, grand taxis run from Essaouira's main rank to Sidi Kaouki for around 50–60 MAD per seat.

When to Come
The best surf season near Essaouira runs September to April, when Atlantic swells are most consistent. Summer offers smaller, gentler waves perfect for beginners. Marrakech can be extremely hot in July and August — Essaouira's coastal breeze makes it the ideal escape. Water temperature stays comfortable year-round (17–22°C) and a thin wetsuit is all you need.

Sidi Kaouki vs Essaouira Beach: Your Surfing Questions Answered
Sidi Kaouki is generally better for surfing, with longer, cleaner, and more consistent waves thanks to direct Atlantic swells. Essaouira Beach is more sheltered, offering smaller waves that are ideal for beginners but often affected by wind.
Both spots are suitable for beginners, depending on conditions. Essaouira Beach is perfect for your first lesson with smaller, softer waves. Sidi Kaouki is also beginner-friendly, with a sandy bottom and multiple surf peaks that allow instructors to find the best waves for your level.
The best time for surfing is from September to April, when Atlantic swells are more consistent. During summer, Essaouira becomes very windy, which is great for kitesurfing but less ideal for surfing. Sidi Kaouki often still offers good surf conditions even when Essaouira is windy.
Most surfers choose to stay in Essaouira and surf in Sidi Kaouki. Essaouira offers more accommodation, restaurants, and cultural experiences, while Sidi Kaouki provides better and more consistent surf conditions. Many surf schools offer day trips between the two.
