Morocco Surf Holiday Cost: How Much to Budget in 2026
Morocco is one of the most affordable surf destinations in the world for European surfers — but how affordable, exactly? Here's a full cost breakdown for a surf holiday in Essaouira and Sidi Kaouki, from budget to mid-range to all-inclusive, with honest numbers so you can plan properly.
Flights to Essaouira
Essaouira has its own small airport (Essaouira-Mogador Airport) with direct flights from select European cities, mainly in France and the UK. Ryanair and Transavia operate routes to Essaouira from Paris, Bordeaux, Nantes, and a few others. Prices for these direct flights typically run €60–150 return depending on the season and how far in advance you book.
If there's no direct flight from your city, the alternative is to fly to Marrakech-Menara Airport (much larger, with direct connections from across Europe) and then take a bus or transfer to Essaouira. The Marrakech–Essaouira bus (Supratours or CTM) costs around €8–10 and takes 3 hours. A private transfer runs €80–100 each way.
Flying into Marrakech opens up far more flight options and is often cheaper overall.
Accommodation
Essaouira and Sidi Kaouki have options at every price point:
Budget (hostel or basic guesthouse): €15–30 per person per night in Essaouira. Sidi Kaouki has fewer budget options but some surf camps offer dormitory beds.
Mid-range (riad or guesthouse with breakfast): €40–80 per night in Essaouira. This is where the experience gets genuinely good — Essaouira's riads are often beautiful and include a Moroccan breakfast.
Sidi Kaouki: Accommodation in Sidi Kaouki runs €30–80 per night for a private room. The advantage is you're right on the beach — you can walk to the surf in 2 minutes.
All-inclusive surf package: Our all-inclusive surf packages start at €380 per person for 6 nights, including accommodation, all meals, 6 surf lessons, equipment, and airport transfers. This is often better value than booking separately, and removes all the planning.
Surf Lessons and Activities
Surf lessons in Essaouira are significantly cheaper than in Europe:
- Group surf lesson (max 5 students): €30 per person
- Private surf lesson: €45 per person
- Surf day trip to Sidi Kaouki (lesson + lunch + free surf): €50 per person
- Kitesurf group lesson: €50 per person
- Sandboarding: €20 per person
For a week of 5 group lessons, budget around €150. For a mix of lessons and day trips, budget €150–250 for the week.
Food and Drink
Eating in Morocco is very affordable if you eat like a local:
- Street food / local restaurant: €3–6 per meal
- Grilled fish at the port in Essaouira: €5–10 (some of the best food in the city)
- Tagine at a mid-range restaurant: €8–15
- Riad breakfast (included at most riads): €0–5 extra
- Mint tea: €0.50–1.50
- Coffee at a café: €1–2
Budget €20–30 per day for food if you mix local restaurants with occasional nicer meals. €40–60 if you eat at tourist restaurants most of the time.
Transport Within Morocco
- Taxi Essaouira to Sidi Kaouki (30km): €8–15 for the whole taxi (not per person)
- Shared grand taxi to Sidi Kaouki: €2–3 per person (slower)
- Bus within Essaouira medina: very cheap, €0.30–0.50
- Rental car in Essaouira: €30–60 per day

Sidi Kaouki vs Essaouira Beach: Your Surfing Questions Answered
Sidi Kaouki is generally better for surfing, with longer, cleaner, and more consistent waves thanks to direct Atlantic swells. Essaouira Beach is more sheltered, offering smaller waves that are ideal for beginners but often affected by wind.
Both spots are suitable for beginners, depending on conditions. Essaouira Beach is perfect for your first lesson with smaller, softer waves. Sidi Kaouki is also beginner-friendly, with a sandy bottom and multiple surf peaks that allow instructors to find the best waves for your level.
The best time for surfing is from September to April, when Atlantic swells are more consistent. During summer, Essaouira becomes very windy, which is great for kitesurfing but less ideal for surfing. Sidi Kaouki often still offers good surf conditions even when Essaouira is windy.
Most surfers choose to stay in Essaouira and surf in Sidi Kaouki. Essaouira offers more accommodation, restaurants, and cultural experiences, while Sidi Kaouki provides better and more consistent surf conditions. Many surf schools offer day trips between the two.
