Every surfer starts somewhere. For thousands of people every year, that somewhere is Essaouira and Sidi Kaouki on Morocco's wild Atlantic coast — and for good reason. Warm weather, consistent waves, uncrowded beaches, and certified local instructors who know every break on this coastline. If you've been thinking about trying surfing for the first time, here's everything you need to know before booking your first lesson.

Is Essaouira Good for Beginner Surfers?

Yes — Essaouira and Sidi Kaouki are among the best places in the world to learn to surf. Here's why:

Consistent swell year-round. Morocco's Atlantic coast picks up swell from the North Atlantic almost every day of the year. Unlike many European destinations where you might wait days for rideable waves, Essaouira delivers consistent conditions that make learning faster and more enjoyable.

Sandy beaches. Sidi Kaouki's long sandy beach means soft landings and no hidden rocks. For beginners, a sandy beach break is the safest and most forgiving environment to learn.

Warm weather. Even in winter, Essaouira rarely drops below 15°C. In summer the water reaches 20°C. You'll be comfortable in the water and on the beach whatever time of year you visit.

Uncrowded lineups. Sidi Kaouki is 25km south of Essaouira — far enough from the tourist trail that the beaches stay quiet. You'll learn without the pressure of crowded surf spots.

What Happens in a Beginner Surf Lesson?

At Surf Twins Essaouira, every beginner lesson follows a structured progression designed to get you standing up and riding waves in a single session. Here's what to expect:

Beach warm-up (15 minutes)
We start on the sand. Your instructor will show you the correct pop-up technique — how to go from lying on the board to standing in one smooth movement. You'll practise this on the beach until it feels natural before you ever touch the water.

White water waves (45 minutes)
We start in the white water — the broken foam after a wave has already broken. These are the safest, most manageable waves for beginners. Your instructor will push you into waves and guide you through your first rides. Most beginners stand up within their first 10-15 attempts.

Green wave introduction (60 minutes)
Once you're comfortable riding white water, we move to catching the unbroken face of a wave. This is where surfing really begins. You'll learn how to read incoming sets, position yourself correctly, and paddle into waves under your own power.

Feedback and cool-down
At the end of the session your instructor will give you personalised feedback on what you did well and what to focus on next time. We can film part of your session on request so you can see your own progress.

  • Wetsuit (3/2mm or shorty depending on season)

How Many Lessons Do I Need as a Beginner?

If you have a week, our surf camp from €380 gives you 12 hours of structured coaching across 6 days — the fastest way to go from complete beginner to confident surfer.

Do I Need to Be Fit to Learn to Surf?

No — but surfing will make you fitter. We teach guests of all fitness levels, ages, and body types. The oldest guest we've taught was 68. The youngest was 5. If you're worried about fitness, just let us know when you book and we'll find the right conditions for you.

Best Time of Year for Beginner Surf Lessons in Essaouira

Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–October) are ideal — consistent swell, warm weather, lighter winds, and quieter beaches. Summer brings smaller, gentler waves perfect for beginners. But there's no bad time to learn — we run lessons 365 days a year.
