Surfing in Essaouira, Morocco — The Complete Guide (2025)
Essaouira is one of Africa's great surf cities. Perched on Morocco's wild Atlantic coast, it combines consistent waves, warm sunshine, rich culture, and some of the most affordable surf lessons and camps in the world. Whether you're picking up a surfboard for the first time or looking to push your surfing to the next level, Essaouira delivers.
This is the complete guide to surfing in Essaouira — everything you need to plan your trip, from the best surf spots and the right time to visit, to how to book lessons and what to expect when you arrive.
Why Surf in Essaouira?
Essaouira has been on the surf map for decades, and for good reason. Here's what makes it stand out from other surf destinations:
Consistent Atlantic swell. The North Atlantic delivers clean, rideable waves to Essaouira's coastline almost every day of the year. Unlike seasonal surf destinations in Europe, you don't need to time your trip around a swell window — the ocean here is reliably active 365 days a year.
Warm, sunny climate. Essaouira sits at the same latitude as southern Spain but benefits from warm Saharan air year-round. Average temperatures stay between 18°C and 26°C, and the sun shines more than 300 days a year. You can surf comfortably in a shorty wetsuit from June to October, and a 3/2mm covers you the rest of the year.
Uncrowded waves. Essaouira and its surrounding beaches — especially Sidi Kaouki, 25km to the south — remain blissfully uncrowded compared to surf destinations in Portugal, Spain, or even Taghazout further south in Morocco. You get real space to learn, progress, and enjoy the water.
World-class kitesurf conditions. The same Atlantic trade winds that shape Essaouira's surf also make it one of the world's top kitesurfing destinations. If you're interested in both sports, there's nowhere better.
Incredible culture and food. Essaouira's UNESCO-listed medina, its fishing port, its hammams, its restaurants and its sunsets make every non-surfing hour as memorable as the surfing itself. This is a destination, not just a surf spot.
The Best Surf Spots in Essaouira
Essaouira's surf is spread across several beaches, each with different character. Here's what you need to know:
Sidi Kaouki
Sidi Kaouki is the main surf hub — a long, open Atlantic beach 25km south of Essaouira with multiple peaks, consistent swell, and almost no crowds. The Surf Twins Essaouira surf school is based here. This is where we run most of our surf lessons and day trips. Suitable for all levels — beginners learn in the sheltered bay, intermediates and advanced surfers move to the more powerful peaks further along the beach.
Essaouira Bay
The bay directly in front of the city is sheltered and reliable, with small to medium waves that are ideal for first-timers and longboarders. It's the easiest beach to access if you're based in the medina.
Moulay Bouzerktoun
North of Essaouira, Moulay Bouzerktoun is a powerful reef and beach break that works best for intermediate and advanced surfers. Strong winds here also make it one of Morocco's top spots for kitesurfing and windsurfing.
Cap Sim
South of Sidi Kaouki, Cap Sim is a more exposed headland that picks up more swell and creates longer, more powerful waves. A good option for surfers looking to push into more challenging conditions.
Secret Spots
Beyond the main beaches, there are several breaks along this coastline that only locals know — sheltered coves, reef points, and rivermouth setups that produce exceptional waves on the right swell. At Surf Twins Essaouira, we take guests to these spots on our surf day trips. They're not on any tourist map, and they're worth the trip.
When Is the Best Time to Surf in Essaouira?
The short answer: any time. But here's how each season breaks down:
Spring (March–May) — Our favourite season. Consistent swell, lighter winds than summer, warm days, and quiet beaches. Perfect for all levels. Water temperature around 18°C.
Summer (June–August) — Smaller, gentler waves ideal for beginners and families. Very strong afternoon winds make this peak kitesurf season. Water reaches 20°C. Busier in town but the surf beaches stay uncrowded.
Autumn (September–November) — The best surf season overall. North Atlantic storms begin generating bigger, cleaner swells. Still warm, still sunny, and the summer crowds have left. Ideal for intermediates and above.
Winter (December–February) — Powerful, consistent swell for experienced surfers. The city is quieter and prices drop. A 3/2mm or 4/3mm wetsuit is recommended. Air temperature stays pleasant — around 18°C on a good day.

Sidi Kaouki vs Essaouira Beach: Your Surfing Questions Answered
Sidi Kaouki is generally better for surfing, with longer, cleaner, and more consistent waves thanks to direct Atlantic swells. Essaouira Beach is more sheltered, offering smaller waves that are ideal for beginners but often affected by wind.
Both spots are suitable for beginners, depending on conditions. Essaouira Beach is perfect for your first lesson with smaller, softer waves. Sidi Kaouki is also beginner-friendly, with a sandy bottom and multiple surf peaks that allow instructors to find the best waves for your level.
The best time for surfing is from September to April, when Atlantic swells are more consistent. During summer, Essaouira becomes very windy, which is great for kitesurfing but less ideal for surfing. Sidi Kaouki often still offers good surf conditions even when Essaouira is windy.
Most surfers choose to stay in Essaouira and surf in Sidi Kaouki. Essaouira offers more accommodation, restaurants, and cultural experiences, while Sidi Kaouki provides better and more consistent surf conditions. Many surf schools offer day trips between the two.
