Surfing with Kids in Essaouira: Age Limits, Safety & What Parents Need to Know
Why Essaouira is Perfect for a Family Surf Holiday
Essaouira and Sidi Kaouki offer some of the most family-friendly surf conditions in Morocco — warm water, long sandy beaches, gentle swell for beginners, and virtually no crowds. If you're planning a surf holiday with children, you've made an excellent choice.
At Surf Twins Essaouira, we've taught hundreds of families to surf since 2017. Kids as young as 6 have caught their first wave with us. Here's everything you need to know before you book.
What Age Can Kids Start Surfing?
We welcome children from age 6 upwards for surf lessons. At this age, most kids have the balance, coordination and attention span to follow basic instructions and genuinely enjoy their first experience on a board.
Children aged 6 to 10 start on wide foam boards in shallow whitewater, focusing on the fundamentals: lying on the board, paddling, and standing up. By age 10–12, many are ready for green waves and more technical coaching. Teenagers often progress fastest of all — they're strong, fearless, and competitive.
Is Surfing Safe for Kids in Essaouira?
Safety is our absolute priority. We teach children at carefully selected beach breaks with sandy bottoms, no rocks, and gentle waves that forgive mistakes. Our instructors are always in the water with younger children, never on the beach watching from a distance.
We use age-appropriate foam surfboards — soft, buoyant and much safer than hard fibreglass for beginners. All students wear fitted wetsuits. Every morning we assess conditions and choose the best spot for each group. Sidi Kaouki's long sandy beach is one of the safest places in Morocco to learn.
Can the Whole Family Surf Together?
Yes — and this is one of the things families love most about surfing with us. We run family lessons where parents and children surf together in the same session. Catching a wave beside your child is one of those moments everyone remembers for years.
We keep groups to a maximum of 5 students per instructor, so even in a family lesson everyone gets personal attention. Parents don't need prior experience — we start from zero.

- Arrive relaxed. Kids pick up on nerves. The more excited you are, the more excited they'll be.
- Let the instructor lead. Your child will trust our team immediately. Stay back and watch — the photos will be incredible.
- Apply sun cream before the lesson. The Morocco sun is strong even in winter.

Sidi Kaouki vs Essaouira Beach: Your Surfing Questions Answered
Sidi Kaouki is generally better for surfing, with longer, cleaner, and more consistent waves thanks to direct Atlantic swells. Essaouira Beach is more sheltered, offering smaller waves that are ideal for beginners but often affected by wind.
Both spots are suitable for beginners, depending on conditions. Essaouira Beach is perfect for your first lesson with smaller, softer waves. Sidi Kaouki is also beginner-friendly, with a sandy bottom and multiple surf peaks that allow instructors to find the best waves for your level.
The best time for surfing is from September to April, when Atlantic swells are more consistent. During summer, Essaouira becomes very windy, which is great for kitesurfing but less ideal for surfing. Sidi Kaouki often still offers good surf conditions even when Essaouira is windy.
Most surfers choose to stay in Essaouira and surf in Sidi Kaouki. Essaouira offers more accommodation, restaurants, and cultural experiences, while Sidi Kaouki provides better and more consistent surf conditions. Many surf schools offer day trips between the two.
