Where to Stay in Sidi Kaouki — A Local's Guide to the Village
Sidi Kaouki has no hotels with elevators, no resorts, no room service — and that's exactly why people fall in love with it. Here's the honest local picture of where to stay, from two people who were born here.
Option 1: Village guesthouses
A handful of small riads and guesthouses sit between the beach and the argan trees. Expect simple, clean rooms, rooftop terraces with ocean views, tagine dinners, and hosts who remember your name by day two. Prices are modest and the sound at night is waves, not traffic. Book early for spring and autumn — the village fills up fast with returning regulars.
Option 2: Stay at a surf camp (accommodation included)

You also wake up 50 metres from the morning session, which matters more than you think when the good waves are at 8am.
Option 3: Sleep in Essaouira, surf in Sidi Kaouki
Plenty of guests prefer the buzz of Essaouira's medina — restaurants, music, nightlife — and commute to the waves. It works: the drive is 30–40 minutes and we include transport from Essaouira with every lesson. What there is NO of (and why that's the point)
No ATM (bring cash), no pharmacy (Essaouira has everything), no supermarket — just a couple of village shops, cafés serving fresh fish and msemen, and eight kilometres of beach. People who need entertainment stay in Essaouira. People who need to exhale stay in Sidi Kaouki.
Our honest recommendation
First trip and surfing is the goal: camp in the village. Mixed group where not everyone surfs: split — some nights village, some nights medina. Digital nomads and long-stayers: guesthouse in the village, laptop on the roof terrace, waves at lunch.
Sidi Kaouki vs Essaouira Beach: Your Surfing Questions Answered
Sidi Kaouki is generally better for surfing, with longer, cleaner, and more consistent waves thanks to direct Atlantic swells. Essaouira Beach is more sheltered, offering smaller waves that are ideal for beginners but often affected by wind.
Both spots are suitable for beginners, depending on conditions. Essaouira Beach is perfect for your first lesson with smaller, softer waves. Sidi Kaouki is also beginner-friendly, with a sandy bottom and multiple surf peaks that allow instructors to find the best waves for your level.
The best time for surfing is from September to April, when Atlantic swells are more consistent. During summer, Essaouira becomes very windy, which is great for kitesurfing but less ideal for surfing. Sidi Kaouki often still offers good surf conditions even when Essaouira is windy.
Most surfers choose to stay in Essaouira and surf in Sidi Kaouki. Essaouira offers more accommodation, restaurants, and cultural experiences, while Sidi Kaouki provides better and more consistent surf conditions. Many surf schools offer day trips between the two.
