We get this question by message almost every week: "Is Essaouira a good place for women to learn to surf?" The honest answer, from two brothers who have taught thousands of women from 50+ countries: yes — and here's everything you actually want to know.
The culture question, answered honestly
Essaouira is one of Morocco's most relaxed, international towns, and Sidi Kaouki even more so. On our beach you'll see local women swimming, European travellers in bikinis, and surfers of every background sharing the same waves. Wetsuits (which we provide) are what everyone wears in the water anyway — the Atlantic is cool year-round. In the village, casual beachwear is completely normal; for the Essaouira medina, most travellers simply throw on a t-shirt and shorts like anywhere else.
What to wear
In the water: swimsuit under the wetsuit we give you — a one-piece or sporty bikini stays put better in whitewater. Out of the water: whatever you'd wear on any beach holiday. Sunscreen, a hat, and a warm layer for the evening dunes are the real essentials.
Learning with us as a woman
Our groups are maximum 5 students, and many weeks they're majority women — solo travellers especially. There's zero macho lineup culture at Sidi Kaouki: the beach is huge, uncrowded, and our instructors' job is to make you feel safe, not to show off. Many of our women guests tell us this was the least intimidating place they've ever surfed.

Sidi Kaouki is a tiny village where everyone knows everyone — our guests routinely tell us they felt safer here than in big European cities. Our camp includes airport transfer, so you're met from the moment you land, and evenings are shared dinners with the group. Sidi Kaouki vs Essaouira Beach: Your Surfing Questions Answered
Sidi Kaouki is generally better for surfing, with longer, cleaner, and more consistent waves thanks to direct Atlantic swells. Essaouira Beach is more sheltered, offering smaller waves that are ideal for beginners but often affected by wind.
Both spots are suitable for beginners, depending on conditions. Essaouira Beach is perfect for your first lesson with smaller, softer waves. Sidi Kaouki is also beginner-friendly, with a sandy bottom and multiple surf peaks that allow instructors to find the best waves for your level.
The best time for surfing is from September to April, when Atlantic swells are more consistent. During summer, Essaouira becomes very windy, which is great for kitesurfing but less ideal for surfing. Sidi Kaouki often still offers good surf conditions even when Essaouira is windy.
Most surfers choose to stay in Essaouira and surf in Sidi Kaouki. Essaouira offers more accommodation, restaurants, and cultural experiences, while Sidi Kaouki provides better and more consistent surf conditions. Many surf schools offer day trips between the two.
