Day Trip from Marrakech to Essaouira: Surf, Culture & the Atlantic Coast
Marrakech to Essaouira is one of the most popular day trips in Morocco — and one of the best. In three hours you go from the heat and chaos of the Red City to a wind-swept Atlantic port town with blue-and-white streets, fresh seafood, and waves. If you add a surf session at Sidi Kaouki, it becomes one of the best days you can have in Morocco, full stop.
Marrakech to Essaouira: The Journey
Essaouira is about 180km west of Marrakech — roughly 2.5 to 3 hours by road depending on traffic. The drive through the argan forest and across the foothills of the Atlas is genuinely beautiful. You have a few options:
- Supratours or CTM bus: The cheapest option — around 80–100 MAD (€8–10). Comfortable, air-conditioned, direct. Departs several times daily from Marrakech bus station. Takes around 3 hours.
- Shared taxi (grand taxi): Faster than the bus (around 2.5 hours), less comfortable, but cheaper if you fill the taxi with 5 other people. Around 100–120 MAD per person.
- Private transfer or rental car: The most flexible option if you want to stop at Sidi Kaouki, explore at your own pace, and not be bound by bus times. Car rental from Marrakech runs around €130/week. A private transfer is around €80–100 each way.
- Organised day tour: Several operators run Marrakech–Essaouira day tours by minibus. Convenient but you lose flexibility and are locked into a group schedule.
What to Do in Essaouira
Essaouira is a UNESCO World Heritage city — the ramparts, the medina, the port, the mellah (Jewish quarter) are all worth exploring on foot. Give yourself at least 2 hours in the city before heading to the beach.
The medina: The blue-and-white streets of Essaouira's medina are some of the most photogenic in Morocco. Unlike Marrakech's souks, they're calm and easy to navigate — no aggressive hustlers, just artisan shops, galleries, and cafes.
The ramparts: Walk the Skala de la Ville — the sea-facing ramparts lined with old Portuguese cannons. The views of the Atlantic are spectacular.
The port: Essaouira's working fishing port is one of the most authentic in Morocco. Blue boats, fresh fish being unloaded, seabirds everywhere. Have grilled sardines at the port — one of the best cheap meals in the country.
Gnawa music: Essaouira is the world capital of Gnawa music. If you're there in June, the Gnawa Music Festival draws artists from across Africa and the world. Year-round, you'll hear musicians in the squares.
Add a Surf Session at Sidi Kaouki
Sidi Kaouki is 30km south of Essaouira — another 30-minute drive down the coast. If you're doing Marrakech–Essaouira as a day trip and want to add surfing, this is how we recommend structuring the day:
- 7:00am: Depart Marrakech
- 10:00am: Arrive Essaouira, walk the medina and ramparts
- 12:00pm: Drive to Sidi Kaouki (30 min)
- 12:30–2:30pm: Surf lesson with Surf Twins
- 2:30–3:30pm: Lunch on the beach
- 4:00pm: Drive back to Essaouira, explore or eat at the port
- 6:00pm: Depart for Marrakech
- 9:00pm: Back in Marrakech
This is a full day but very doable. If you have 2 days, even better — stay one night in Essaouira or Sidi Kaouki and enjoy a sunset and a second surf session in the morning.

Sidi Kaouki vs Essaouira Beach: Your Surfing Questions Answered
Sidi Kaouki is generally better for surfing, with longer, cleaner, and more consistent waves thanks to direct Atlantic swells. Essaouira Beach is more sheltered, offering smaller waves that are ideal for beginners but often affected by wind.
Both spots are suitable for beginners, depending on conditions. Essaouira Beach is perfect for your first lesson with smaller, softer waves. Sidi Kaouki is also beginner-friendly, with a sandy bottom and multiple surf peaks that allow instructors to find the best waves for your level.
The best time for surfing is from September to April, when Atlantic swells are more consistent. During summer, Essaouira becomes very windy, which is great for kitesurfing but less ideal for surfing. Sidi Kaouki often still offers good surf conditions even when Essaouira is windy.
Most surfers choose to stay in Essaouira and surf in Sidi Kaouki. Essaouira offers more accommodation, restaurants, and cultural experiences, while Sidi Kaouki provides better and more consistent surf conditions. Many surf schools offer day trips between the two.
