Kitesurfing for Beginners in Essaouira, Morocco — The Complete Guide
You've never kitesurfed before. You've watched videos, seen people flying across the water, and thought — I want to try that. But you have no idea where to start, whether you're fit enough, how long it takes to learn, or whether Morocco is actually the right place to do it.
We've been teaching kitesurfing in Essaouira since 2017. Here's the honest beginner's guide to kitesurfing in Morocco — everything you need to know before you book.
Why Learn to Kitesurf in Morocco?
Essaouira is consistently ranked among the world's top kitesurfing destinations, and it's not by accident. Several things combine to make it exceptional for beginners specifically:
The wind is reliable. The Atlantic trade winds blow side-shore at Essaouira almost every afternoon from June to September, and frequently through the rest of the year. Side-shore wind is the safest and most consistent for learning — it pushes you along the beach rather than out to sea. Beginners need consistent wind, and Essaouira delivers it.
Flat water in the bay. The bay directly in front of Essaouira has flat, shallow water — ideal for the early stages of learning where you need to body drag, practice water starts, and build confidence without fighting waves. As you progress, the wave spots at Sidi Kaouki give you more challenging conditions.
Warm climate year-round. Even in winter, Essaouira stays warm enough that falling in the water doesn't feel like a punishment. In summer the water reaches 20°C. Comfortable conditions make learning faster and more enjoyable.
Uncrowded spots. Unlike some of Europe's famous kite spots where the water is packed with kiters, Essaouira's beaches stay relatively uncrowded. More space means safer, more relaxed learning conditions.
How Long Does It Take to Learn to Kitesurf?
This is the most common question we get. The honest answer: most beginners need between 9 and 15 hours of instruction to reach an independent level — meaning they can ride upwind, control the kite safely, and go out without an instructor.
Here's how the progression typically looks:
Hours 1–3 — Kite control on the beach
You'll start with a trainer kite on land, learning the wind window, how to position the kite safely, and the basic steering movements. This phase looks simple but it's the foundation of everything — understanding how the kite moves through the wind window is the most important skill you'll develop.
Hours 3–6 — Body dragging in the water
Once you can control the kite confidently, we move to the water. Body dragging means using the kite's power to pull you through the water without a board — you're learning to control the kite while in the ocean, managing the forces involved, and practising the position you'll need for water starts.
Hours 6–10 — Water starts and first rides
This is where it all comes together. With the board on your feet and the kite powered up, your first water start is one of the most memorable moments in any kitesurf progression. Most beginners get their first sustained ride during this phase.
Hours 10–15 — Riding and going upwind
Once you're riding, the focus shifts to control, direction, and eventually going upwind — the skill that makes you truly independent as a kitesurfer. You're no longer just getting dragged downwind; you're choosing where to go.

Do I Need to Be Fit to Learn to Kitesurf?
Reasonably fit, yes — kitesurfing is more physically demanding than surfing in the early stages. The main demands are upper body strength for controlling the kite and core stability for riding. That said, we've taught people of all shapes, sizes, and fitness levels. If you can swim and you're in reasonable health, you can learn to kitesurf.
One thing that does help: if you've surfed before, your understanding of wind and waves will accelerate your kite progression. If you haven't surfed, that's no problem at all — the skills are different enough that prior surf experience isn't necessary.
Is Kitesurfing Dangerous for Beginners?
Kitesurfing has a reputation for being dangerous, and in the early days of the sport that reputation was partly deserved. Modern equipment and proper instruction have changed that significantly.
With good instruction, proper equipment, and the right location, kitesurfing is a safe sport to learn. The key is not trying to self-teach from YouTube videos — the first few hours with an IKO-certified instructor are essential for building the safety habits and kite control that keep you and others safe on the water.
At Surf Twins Essaouira we use Duotone kites with modern safety systems, our instructors are IKO certified, and we always assess conditions before deciding where and whether to kite. If conditions aren't right for beginners, we'll reschedule rather than push you into unsafe situations.
What's the Best Time of Year to Learn to Kitesurf in Essaouira?
Summer (June–August) is peak kitesurf season — the Atlantic trade winds are at their most consistent, blowing almost every afternoon. This is the best time for beginners who want guaranteed wind.
Spring (April–May) and Autumn (September–October) also have good wind frequency with slightly more variable conditions. Still excellent for learning, with the added benefit of fewer people and more peaceful beaches.
Winter (November–March) can have good kite days but wind is less consistent. Better suited to experienced kiters who can wait for conditions.
Can I Combine Kitesurfing with Surfing?
Yes — and many guests do. Our surf camp packages can be tailored to include both surf lessons and kitesurf lessons across the same week. The two sports complement each other well — your ocean awareness from surfing helps with kitesurf, and vice versa.
If you're interested in combining both, just mention it when you contact us and we'll put together a programme that works for your level and the available time.

Sidi Kaouki vs Essaouira Beach: Your Surfing Questions Answered
Sidi Kaouki is generally better for surfing, with longer, cleaner, and more consistent waves thanks to direct Atlantic swells. Essaouira Beach is more sheltered, offering smaller waves that are ideal for beginners but often affected by wind.
Both spots are suitable for beginners, depending on conditions. Essaouira Beach is perfect for your first lesson with smaller, softer waves. Sidi Kaouki is also beginner-friendly, with a sandy bottom and multiple surf peaks that allow instructors to find the best waves for your level.
The best time for surfing is from September to April, when Atlantic swells are more consistent. During summer, Essaouira becomes very windy, which is great for kitesurfing but less ideal for surfing. Sidi Kaouki often still offers good surf conditions even when Essaouira is windy.
Most surfers choose to stay in Essaouira and surf in Sidi Kaouki. Essaouira offers more accommodation, restaurants, and cultural experiences, while Sidi Kaouki provides better and more consistent surf conditions. Many surf schools offer day trips between the two.
