Sidi Kaouki vs Essaouira Beach — Which Surf Spot is Right for You?
Sidi Kaouki vs Essaouira Beach — Two Worlds, Two Surf Experiences
If you are planning a surf trip to Morocco and trying to decide between Sidi Kaouki and Essaouira, you are not alone. This is the question we get asked most often at Surf Twins. Both locations are incredible — but they offer very different experiences. Here is our honest, local guide to help you choose the right spot for your level, your style, and your goals.
Sidi Kaouki — Morocco's Best Kept Surf Secret
Sidi Kaouki is a small, peaceful village located 25 kilometres south of Essaouira — about 25 minutes by car. It sits at the edge of a wide, open bay with a 5-kilometre stretch of sandy beach, consistent Atlantic swells, and almost no crowds. This is where we were born, where we learned to surf, and where we take most of our students today.
Why Sidi Kaouki is Perfect for Surf Lessons
The waves at Sidi Kaouki are longer, more consistent, and better shaped than in Essaouira town. The sandy bottom makes it safe for beginners, and the variety of peaks along the beach means we can always find the right wave for your level — whether you are catching your very first wave or working on your backside turns.
The beach faces southwest, which means it picks up Atlantic groundswells more directly than Essaouira town. When the swell is small in Essaouira, Sidi Kaouki often still has rideable waves. This is why we base our surf school here — consistency is everything when you are learning.
Secret Spots Around Sidi Kaouki
Beyond the main beach, there are several secret surf spots that only locals know about. La Grotte is a beautiful right-hand point break that works best on a mid to high tide with a northwest swell. La Corona is another hidden gem — a long, peeling wave that beginners rarely see because you need to know the coastline to find it. As local twin brothers who have surfed this coast for over 15 years, we take our students to these spots as part of our surf trips and packages.
The Vibe at Sidi Kaouki
Sidi Kaouki has a completely different atmosphere from Essaouira city. It is a small, authentic Moroccan fishing village with a handful of restaurants, guesthouses, and surf shops. There are camels on the beach. The sunsets are extraordinary. It is the kind of place where you slow down, connect with nature, and remember why you came to Morocco in the first place.
Essaouira Beach — The Wind City and Its Waves
Essaouira is a UNESCO World Heritage city with a stunning blue and white medina, a busy fishing port, and a long, wide beach stretching north of the city walls. The beach is accessible on foot from most riads and hotels in the medina, which makes it very convenient for a spontaneous surf lesson.
Why Essaouira Beach is Great for Beginners
The bay at Essaouira is naturally sheltered, which means waves here tend to be smaller and less powerful than at Sidi Kaouki. For a complete beginner who has never surfed in their life, Essaouira beach can be a comfortable introduction to the ocean. The flat water sections are also perfect for kitesurf beginners to practice water starts.
The Wind Factor in Essaouira
Essaouira is famous worldwide for its wind — it blows from the north consistently from April to October, often reaching 25 to 35 knots during summer. This is incredible for kitesurfing, and Essaouira is regularly ranked among the top 10 kitesurf destinations in the world. However, for surfing, the wind creates choppy, difficult conditions — especially in the afternoons. Early mornings before 10am are often the best window for surfable conditions in Essaouira town during summer.
Essaouira as a Base
Even if you surf at Sidi Kaouki, staying in Essaouira makes a lot of sense. The city has much more choice in accommodation, restaurants, hammams, and cultural activities. The medina is magical — blue and white streets, artisan workshops, fresh fish at the port. Essaouira is one of the most beautiful cities in Morocco, and it is the perfect base for a surf holiday even if your actual surfing happens at Sidi Kaouki.
