When people search for a surf camp in Morocco, two destinations come up: Taghazout (near Agadir) and Essaouira with Sidi Kaouki. Both are legitimate surf destinations with good camps, real waves, and experienced schools. But they offer very different experiences, and choosing the wrong one for your level and travel style is one of the most common mistakes surfers make when planning a Morocco trip.

We're based in Essaouira, so we're biased. But we'll give you the honest comparison.

The Waves: Taghazout vs Essaouira

Taghazout is famous for its world-class point breaks: Anchor Point, Killer Point, Boilers, Panorama. These are long, powerful right-handers that peel for hundreds of metres. When they're on, they're genuinely world-class. Intermediate and advanced surfers from across Europe travel specifically to surf these breaks.

The downside: most of Taghazout's famous spots break over reef, they're more powerful, and the best breaks can be crowded. As a beginner, you'll surf softer beach breaks nearby — perfectly fine, but not the iconic waves that made Taghazout famous.

Essaouira and Sidi Kaouki have softer, sandier beach breaks. Sidi Kaouki — 30km south of Essaouira — is a long beach break with multiple peaks that works at most tide levels and in most swell directions. It's consistent, forgiving, and ideal for all levels. Cap Sim and La Grotte (15km further south) offer powerful reef breaks for surfers who want more challenge.

Verdict on waves: Taghazout wins for advanced surfers seeking world-class point breaks. Essaouira and Sidi Kaouki win for beginners, improvers, and anyone who wants quality waves without the reef and the crowds.

The Vibe: Very Different Atmospheres

Taghazout has become Morocco's most well-known surf destination, which means it's busy. The village is packed with surf camps, surf shops, cafes, and international visitors — a social, energetic surf culture. If you want to meet other surfers, share sessions, and have a high-energy communal experience, Taghazout delivers that.

Essaouira and Sidi Kaouki are more laid-back. Sidi Kaouki is a small Moroccan village — a few surf camps, some restaurants, a couple of cafes, and not much else. The pace is slower. The beaches are quieter. The experience feels more authentic. Essaouira city — 30 minutes away — adds a cultural dimension that Taghazout simply doesn't have: a UNESCO-listed medina, a working fishing port, Gnawa music, world-class restaurants, and centuries of history.

Culture: Essaouira Has No Equal

This is where Essaouira wins decisively. Jimi Hendrix famously spent time there. Orson Welles filmed Othello there. The ramparts overlooking the Atlantic appear in Game of Thrones. The blue-and-white streets, the souks, the port — it's one of Morocco's most beautiful cities.

After a surf session at Sidi Kaouki, spending the evening wandering the medina, eating freshly grilled fish at the port, or listening to live Gnawa music is an experience that no other surf destination in Morocco can offer.
