A Complete Guide to Planning Your Surf Holiday in Morocco — Essaouira & Sidi Kaouki
Morocco has become one of Europe's favourite surf destinations — and for good reason. Consistent Atlantic swell, warm sunshine, affordable prices, and a culture that will stay with you long after you've left the water. If you're planning a surf holiday in Morocco, Essaouira and Sidi Kaouki are the best place to start.
At Surf Twins Essaouira, we've been running surf holidays on this coastline since 2017, welcoming over 7,000 surfers from more than 50 countries. Here's everything you need to know to plan yours.
When Is the Best Time to Go on a Surf Holiday in Morocco?
Morocco's Atlantic coast delivers surf year-round — one of its biggest advantages over European destinations. Each season has its character:
Spring (March–May): Warm days, consistent swell, lighter winds. Ideal for beginners and intermediates. One of our favourite seasons — the beaches are quiet and conditions are excellent.
Summer (June–August): Smaller, gentler waves perfect for learning. Strong trade winds make it the best kitesurf season in Essaouira. Water temperature is at its warmest.
Autumn (September–November): The best surf season overall. Bigger swells start arriving from the North Atlantic, conditions are more powerful, and the weather is still warm. Ideal for intermediates and beyond.
Winter (December–February): Powerful waves for experienced surfers. Cold water by Moroccan standards (around 17°C), but nothing a 3/2mm wetsuit can't handle.
If you're a beginner or travelling with family, aim for April–May or September–October for the best combination of conditions, weather, and quieter beaches.
Where to Surf — Essaouira vs Sidi Kaouki
Essaouira's Atlantic coast has two main surf zones, each with its own character.
Essaouira Bay is right in town — sheltered, easy to access, and perfect for beginners learning their first waves. The bay provides flat water and gentle rolling swells that won't intimidate anyone.
Sidi Kaouki, 25km south of Essaouira, is our home base and the real heart of the surf scene. It's a long, open stretch of Atlantic coastline with multiple peaks along the beach — consistent swell, less wind interference, and almost no crowds. For anyone seriously interested in surfing, Sidi Kaouki is the destination.
We also take guests to secret spots like La Corona and La Grotte — breaks that aren't on any tourist map and that only locals know. These are the moments that make a surf holiday in Morocco truly special.
What Does a Typical Surf Holiday Day Look Like?
With Surf Twins Essaouira, your day is completely taken care of. Here's what a typical day trip or surf camp day looks like:
10:00 — We pick you up from your accommodation in Essaouira. No need to find your own transport or figure out which beach to go to.
10:30 — Arrive at the surf spot. We check the conditions that morning and choose the perfect break for your level — sheltered bay for beginners, open beach break for intermediates, more powerful waves for advanced surfers.
10:30–12:30 — 2-hour surf lesson with your certified instructor. We cover ocean safety, reading waves, paddling, pop-up technique, and how to ride. By the end, most beginners are standing up and catching green waves.
12:30 — Traditional Moroccan lunch on the beach or at a local restaurant. Tagine, fresh bread, mint tea, fresh-squeezed orange juice. One of the highlights of the day for almost every guest.
14:00–17:00 — Afternoon free surf. Practice everything you learned with your instructor nearby to give feedback. No pressure, just waves.
17:00 — Back in Essaouira, tired in the best possible way.

Sidi Kaouki vs Essaouira Beach: Your Surfing Questions Answered
Sidi Kaouki is generally better for surfing, with longer, cleaner, and more consistent waves thanks to direct Atlantic swells. Essaouira Beach is more sheltered, offering smaller waves that are ideal for beginners but often affected by wind.
Both spots are suitable for beginners, depending on conditions. Essaouira Beach is perfect for your first lesson with smaller, softer waves. Sidi Kaouki is also beginner-friendly, with a sandy bottom and multiple surf peaks that allow instructors to find the best waves for your level.
The best time for surfing is from September to April, when Atlantic swells are more consistent. During summer, Essaouira becomes very windy, which is great for kitesurfing but less ideal for surfing. Sidi Kaouki often still offers good surf conditions even when Essaouira is windy.
Most surfers choose to stay in Essaouira and surf in Sidi Kaouki. Essaouira offers more accommodation, restaurants, and cultural experiences, while Sidi Kaouki provides better and more consistent surf conditions. Many surf schools offer day trips between the two.
