Surf Lesson Sidi Kaouki — What to Expect, Prices & How to Book
Sidi Kaouki is the best place in the Essaouira area to take a surf lesson. The waves are consistent, the beach is wide and sandy, and the setting — Atlantic dunes, a small Moroccan village, kite surfers in the afternoon sky — makes every session feel like more than just a lesson. Here’s everything you need to know about surf lessons at Sidi Kaouki.
Why Take a Surf Lesson at Sidi Kaouki Rather than Essaouira Beach?
Essaouira’s main beach works for early morning sessions, but it has two problems: wind and inconsistency. The afternoon trade winds arrive by midday and make conditions choppy. And the swell direction means the beach doesn’t always have rideable waves.
Sidi Kaouki is different. Positioned 30km south of Essaouira, it catches more swell from more directions, producing consistent waves at most tide levels. The sandy bottom makes it safe for beginners. There are multiple peaks along the beach, so we can always find the right spot for your level. And because it’s a smaller village, the beach is far less crowded than Essaouira.
This is why Surf Twins Essaouira bases the majority of its lessons at Sidi Kaouki.

Group vs Private — Which Surf Lesson is Better at Sidi Kaouki?
Group lessons work well for beginners, travellers with friends, and anyone on a budget. Our groups are strictly capped at 5 students — smaller than almost any other school on this coastline. You get real coaching time.
Private lessons are better if you want faster progression, have specific technique issues, or simply prefer full individual attention. The instructor’s focus is entirely on you.
Most first-timers start with a group lesson and book a private session once they’ve caught the bug.
What to Expect in Your Surf Lesson at Sidi Kaouki
On the beach (30–45 minutes)
Safety rules, ocean reading, paddle technique, the pop-up movement practiced until automatic, wave positioning. This is where most surf schools cut corners. We don’t.
In the whitewater (45–60 minutes)
You start in broken waves where you can focus on the pop-up without worrying about timing. Most beginners stand up within the first 30 minutes.
Green waves (remaining time)
Once your instructor sees you’re ready, you move further out to catch unbroken waves. This is where surfing really begins.
How Many Surf Lessons Do You Need at Sidi Kaouki?

Most guests book 3–5 lessons over a week and leave feeling like real surfers.

Sidi Kaouki vs Essaouira Beach: Your Surfing Questions Answered
Sidi Kaouki is generally better for surfing, with longer, cleaner, and more consistent waves thanks to direct Atlantic swells. Essaouira Beach is more sheltered, offering smaller waves that are ideal for beginners but often affected by wind.
Both spots are suitable for beginners, depending on conditions. Essaouira Beach is perfect for your first lesson with smaller, softer waves. Sidi Kaouki is also beginner-friendly, with a sandy bottom and multiple surf peaks that allow instructors to find the best waves for your level.
The best time for surfing is from September to April, when Atlantic swells are more consistent. During summer, Essaouira becomes very windy, which is great for kitesurfing but less ideal for surfing. Sidi Kaouki often still offers good surf conditions even when Essaouira is windy.
Most surfers choose to stay in Essaouira and surf in Sidi Kaouki. Essaouira offers more accommodation, restaurants, and cultural experiences, while Sidi Kaouki provides better and more consistent surf conditions. Many surf schools offer day trips between the two.
