Kitesurfing in Essaouira: Everything You Need to Know
Ask any kite surfer in Europe where they dream of going, and Essaouira will come up within the first three answers. This ancient Moroccan port city has earned a global reputation as one of the finest kitesurfing destinations on the planet — and once you feel that wind on the Atlantic, you'll understand why.
Why Essaouira is a Kitesurfing Paradise
The secret is the wind. Essaouira sits on a stretch of the Moroccan Atlantic coast where a powerful thermal wind — known as the "alizé" — blows with remarkable consistency from late spring through summer and into autumn. This is not occasional wind. This is reliable, powerful, side-shore wind that kite surfers specifically look for.
The conditions are close to perfect: the wind blows from a consistent direction, the beaches are wide and open, and the water is relatively flat close to shore — ideal for beginners — with more open ocean available for those who want to go further and faster.
The Best Spots for Kitesurfing Near Essaouira
Sidi Kaouki is the crown jewel. Located about 25km south of Essaouira, this long, exposed beach picks up every gust of the alizé and delivers it with full force. The beach is long, the water entry is easy, and there is more than enough space for kites without crowding. This is where serious kite surfers come.
Essaouira Beach (Plage Essaouira) is closer to town and more accessible. Great for a first session or a casual afternoon on the kite. The medina in the background makes for a spectacular setting.
Moulay Bouzerktoun, just north of Essaouira, is another excellent spot with slightly different wind angles — worth checking during specific conditions.
When is the Best Time to Kitesurf in Essaouira?
The kitesurfing season runs roughly from April to October, with the strongest and most consistent winds arriving in June, July, and August. Wind speeds regularly reach 25–35 knots during peak season, which is powerful enough for experienced riders and manageable for beginners with proper instruction.
Outside of peak season, you can still find good kite days — just not as reliably. The shoulder months of April, May, September, and October often offer the best combination of wind and warmth.
Taking Kite Lessons with Surf Twins Essaouira
Learning to kitesurf is not something to attempt alone. The power of a kite in strong wind is significant, and proper instruction makes the difference between a great experience and a dangerous one.
At Surf Twins Essaouira, our kite instructors are certified, experienced, and genuinely passionate about teaching. We start every student with a full safety briefing, body drag techniques, and kite control on land before any of our students ever touch the water. This foundation is everything.
Most students complete their first water session within 2–3 days of lessons. By the end of a 5-day course, most are riding independently. It is one of the most satisfying progressions in any water sport.
What to Bring
All kite equipment is provided. You'll need comfortable beach clothing, a rash vest or thin wetsuit (depending on season), sunscreen, and a sense of adventure. That's it.
