Complete Guide to Surfing in Essaouira, Morocco (2026)
Why Essaouira is One of Africa's Best Surf Destinations
Essaouira sits on Morocco's Atlantic coast, directly in the path of North Atlantic swells that travel thousands of kilometres before breaking on its beaches. The result is one of the most consistent surf destinations in Africa — waves year-round, uncrowded beaches, and conditions that work for every level from complete beginner to experienced surfer.
Unlike Taghazout (Morocco's most famous surf town), Essaouira combines surfing with one of Morocco's most beautiful cities — a UNESCO-listed medina, fresh seafood at the port, Gnawa music in the squares, and a relaxed atmosphere that Taghazout has largely lost to tourism. You can surf in the morning and explore a 15th-century fortress in the afternoon.
At Surf Twins Essaouira, we've been teaching people to surf here since 2017. Mouhssin and Yassine — twin brothers born and raised in Essaouira — have surfed every break on this coastline since childhood. This guide is written from that knowledge.
The Best Surf Spots in Essaouira
1. Sidi Kaouki — The Best Overall Surf Spot
Sidi Kaouki is 30km south of Essaouira and the main base of Surf Twins Essaouira. A wide, sandy beach break with multiple peaks that works in most swell and tide conditions. The sandy bottom makes it safe for beginners, while the range of peaks offers quality waves for intermediate surfers. It's the most consistent surf spot in the Essaouira area and the one we use for most of our lessons and day trips.
Level: All levels | Break type: Sandy beach break | Best season: September to April
2. Essaouira Beach — The City Break
The main 5km beach running south from the medina. More sheltered than Sidi Kaouki, with smaller, gentler waves — ideal for absolute beginners and children. The beach gets windy from midday onwards, so morning sessions are always better quality. Walkable from the medina.
Level: Beginners | Best time: Morning sessions before 11am | Season: Year-round
3. Cap Sim / La Grotte — The Advanced Break
About 45km south of Essaouira, La Grotte is a right-hand reef break that produces powerful, hollow waves when the swell is right. One of the best waves in the area — but for experienced surfers only. Shallow reef, strong currents, and requires a 4WD to access properly.
Level: Advanced | Best season: November to February
4. Moulay Bouzerktoun — The Kite & Surf Spot
25km north of Essaouira, Moulay is world-famous for kitesurfing but also produces good surf on the right swell. More exposed than Sidi Kaouki, with faster and sometimes hollow waves. Great for intermediate to advanced surfers who want something different.
Level: Intermediate to advanced | Best season: Winter swells
Best Time to Surf in Essaouira
Essaouira has waves year-round, but conditions vary significantly by season:
September to November (Autumn) — Our Favourite Season
The best all-round time for surfing in Essaouira. Summer crowds are gone, the water is still warm (18–20°C), and North Atlantic groundswells start building after summer. Clean waves, light wind, uncrowded breaks. Ideal for all levels.
December to March (Winter) — Best Swell Season
The most powerful waves of the year. Consistent groundswells produce excellent conditions for intermediate and advanced surfers. Water temperature drops to 15–17°C so a 4/3mm wetsuit is essential. Beginners can still learn — spot selection matters more in winter.
April to June (Spring) — Consistent and Uncrowded
Swell is still present from winter, the weather warms up, and the beaches are quiet. Excellent for beginner and intermediate surfers. Water warming to 17–19°C.
July to August (Summer) — Best for Beginners
The gentlest waves of the year — small, clean, and perfect for first-timers and children. Strong afternoon trade winds arrive by midday — always surf in the morning. Water is warmest (19–21°C).

Sidi Kaouki vs Essaouira Beach: Your Surfing Questions Answered
Sidi Kaouki is generally better for surfing, with longer, cleaner, and more consistent waves thanks to direct Atlantic swells. Essaouira Beach is more sheltered, offering smaller waves that are ideal for beginners but often affected by wind.
Both spots are suitable for beginners, depending on conditions. Essaouira Beach is perfect for your first lesson with smaller, softer waves. Sidi Kaouki is also beginner-friendly, with a sandy bottom and multiple surf peaks that allow instructors to find the best waves for your level.
The best time for surfing is from September to April, when Atlantic swells are more consistent. During summer, Essaouira becomes very windy, which is great for kitesurfing but less ideal for surfing. Sidi Kaouki often still offers good surf conditions even when Essaouira is windy.
Most surfers choose to stay in Essaouira and surf in Sidi Kaouki. Essaouira offers more accommodation, restaurants, and cultural experiences, while Sidi Kaouki provides better and more consistent surf conditions. Many surf schools offer day trips between the two.
